Body Fat, Body Fat, Go Away!

Did you know that half of the Malaysian adult population is either overweight or obese? Well, it’s no surprise as a jarring 54.2% of our adult population were reported to be overweight or obese. Shocking!

To make matters worse, obesity is a risk factor for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, sleep apnea, and certain cancers!

Fret not, all hope is not lost yet! Despite the rising percentages of the obesity rate in Malaysia, there are 5 steps you can take to ensure that you continue to leave a healthy life. More importantly, these are things you can start NOW rather than later.

 

Goodbye, Junk Food

A great start to fighting obesity would be avoiding foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugar. So lay off the chips and start tweaking your diet to ensure that you integrate more whole foods and fresh fruits and vegetables to your meals and snacks!

 

Work Those Fat Off

Healthy diet and physical activity always go hand-in-hand in decreasing the risk of obesity and even in combating it if you already are obese or overweight.

Exercise, even in moderate amounts, can go a long way in helping you keep the weight off. Physical activities will increase your energy expenditure therefore helping you burn fat and increase your muscle weight.

 

Get Some Beauty Sleep In

Sleeplessness can lead to obesity in many ways. People who lack enough sleep become too tired to exercise, hence decreasing the “calories burned” side of the weight-change equation.

Moreover, sleeplessness also disrupts the balance of key hormones that control appetite, so people who lack sleep may be hungrier than usual, causing them to eat more!

 

Cut Down on Screen Time

Let’s admit it, we are all guilty of spending too much time on our screens—be it playing mobile games or binge-watching out favorite shows on YouTube or Netflix.

The more time you spend in front of your phone, computer or television, the less opportunity you have to become physically active! Adding to that is the fact that your screen time can also affect the amount of sleep you get, depriving you of your much needed rest.
